Kevin McCarthy’s ouster has Democrats scrambling.
— New York Times Pitchbot (@DougJBalloon) October 3, 2023
Whether it’s the Squad occasionally offering tepid criticism of Hakeem Jeffries or the Freedom Caucus successfully ousting Kevin McCarthy, both sides have struggled to rein in their renegade factions.

The U.S. now has only one party—the Democratic Party—that, for all its flaws, is an actual, recognizable, grown up, capable-of-governing political party. And then there are the Republicans, at once childish and dangerous.
if "American politics" were broken, we'd have seen things like this happen when Democrats controlled the House
— John Harwood (@JohnJHarwood) October 3, 2023
but we didn't
what's broken, very specifically, is the Republican Party
the contrast between the parties in capacity to govern 21st century America has never been clearer
— John Harwood (@JohnJHarwood) October 3, 2023
Maybe we can finally get past the polarization canard. Rs are dysfunctional, radical, destructive. THAT is the problem. Ds are into governing
— Jennifer Truthful, Not Neutral Rubin (@JRubinBlogger) October 4, 2023
Not shutting the government down is not "solving" a "problem". That's like taking credit for not running over the neighborhood cat

GOP (Sunday): “Dems are pedophiles!”
— Tea Pain (@TeaPainUSA) October 4, 2023
GOP (Monday): “Dems are Communists!”
GOP (Tuesday): “Dems are fascists!”
GOP (Today): “Why didn’t Dems help us?”
The idea that Ds should have bailed out McCarthy is a codicil of the larger logic of DC punditry in which R bad behavior/destruction is assumed, a baseline like weather, and Ds managing the consequences of that behavior is a given. It’s part of DC being hardwired for the GOP.

This is a very wrong take https://t.co/3WppU6qQDa

Yes, because strengthening someone who voted to overturn the election, held the entire US economy hostage, launched a baseless impeachment inquiry without a vote, and refuses to honor his word is what is in the best interest of this country.
— Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@AOC) October 4, 2023
Do some of you hear yourselves? https://t.co/EnmF2TkbTG
This is actually a good reminder that when Republican so-called moderates demand bipartisanship, what they're really insisting on is Dem help in whitewashing GOP extremism and achieving distance from it. https://t.co/uXXrZhJ3Tv
— Greg Sargent (@ThePlumLineGS) October 3, 2023
Imagine the reaction of your past selves when you travel back in time and tell them how much you like Michael Steele's commentary.
Those who are blaming Democrats for McCarthy's demise, tell me why on Earth 1 OR 2 would Democrats risk political capital with their own base to save McCarthy (who backs efforts to impeach Biden) when you know damn well Republicans wouldn't even consider it if roles were reversed
— Michael Steele (@MichaelSteele) October 3, 2023
This is ridiculous. It is not the job of the Democrats to solve an internal GOP drama that was inevitable because of a deal McCarthy himself made that he should never have made. https://t.co/V9rSl4Vtz2

— mike luckovich (@mluckovichajc) October 4, 2023
Such a bullshit take. Democrats DID do the right thing on behalf of the American people. They got out of the way & let Republicans bury themselves. And by doing so, Democrats guaranteed Republicans will lose control of the House, which IS the right thing for the American people. https://t.co/6s5nLMhkJZ
— Joe Walsh (@WalshFreedom) October 4, 2023
Was this before or after he whined about the Democrats not cleaning up the Republicans' mess?
Wow. Just wow https://t.co/SDnuCgrgWH

Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-NC), a key ally of Speaker McCarthy, seems to criticize Democrats for not helping McCarthy:

This makes absolutely no sense. The opposition party always votes against the candidate of the opposite party in a parliamentary leadership election which this was. What you’re describing is not only not a norm it is unprecedented.

I'm not sure I trust a pollster who publishes subgroup results for a sample of 31 respondents (nevermind the weirdness of Christie getting 1% in that subgroup, which translates to .31 respondents... which can't even be explained by rounding). https://t.co/z211e5hF9Q pic.twitter.com/rfzLBIUZTr
