Andy and the anti-vaxxer
It's useful to step back from time to time and remind ourselves just how far beyond precedent the Republican party has drifted. The following clip aired in March of 1962. It came from one of the most popular shows of the decade, especially in rural America.
There
was nothing controversial about assuming that vaccination was a public
good or about depicting the vaccine-hesitant as backwards and
uneducated. Audiences would have found it strange to think otherwise. As
with many other issues, the Right's "reactionary" positions are not
actually a move back to popular attitudes from the past. They are
instead new and radical and would have been seen as crazy sixty years
ago.
