The fascination with automation was a big part of the late 19th/early 20th century popular imagination.
And they ued to call all vending machines "slot machines."

I'll admit it was an unconventional choice, but I thought it would be new to most of the people out there and besides, I've been really fond of this version ever since I came across the EP for "Trapdoor" in a cutout bin (anyone else out there old enough to remember those?).
